INTERNATIONAL WETLANDS DAY 2023

Joy Amuche

Have you ever imagined if our earth is all dry: without any form of wetness at all? What do you think would have happened to everyone including plants and animals? Would we have been in existence in the first place? Well, your guess is as good as mine. What is a Wetland? A Wetland is a place where the surface area is covered with water (which could be salt water, fresh water or even a mixture of the two). Wetlands could be permanent or temporary We know That 70% of the total landmass of the earth is covered by water but this is not equally distributed hence the lack of wetlands in certain areas and the loss of its huge benefit to the host environment.

LIGHT FOR NATURE

Exactly 52 years ago, in 1971, environmentalists from across the world came together to renew their commitment to restore wetlands and strengthen their presence where necessary. Although it wasn't celebrated officially until 1996. International Wetlands Day is observed annually on the 2nd of February. This day is used to raise awareness about the importance of wetland ecosystems, biodiversity and living organisms in this habitat. Wetlands play a major role in maintaining the health of our planet. The theme picked for this year's celebration is IT'S TIME FOR WETLAND RESTORATION Discussions will span across the issues faced by this peculiar ecosystem which include pollution, climate change effects, ignorance of host communities and many more. Wetlands are an essential tool for balanced biodiversity, water storage and purification. It is much needed for carbon storage, flood control, habitation and recreation of unique aquatic creatures. Light For Nature (LINAT) Initiative is one that has been committed to the restoration of coastal mangroves in the nation of Cameroon and has been actively sensitizing and mobilizing the youths in the community to do the same. LINAT also organizes, supports and participates in multidisciplinary research on the natural ecosystem with a particular interest in coastal mangroves.

Today, the 2nd of February 2023, LINAT and all its team members join other environmentalists and nature lovers around the world to celebrate and create awareness about the importance of wetland restoration. Yes, It is time for wetland restoration, let's make our planet healthier than we met it.
